The Beauty of the Off Season in Italy

The Beauty of the Off Season in Italy

Many people are only interested in taking a trip to Italy in the summer time, but have you given some thought to experiencing Italy in the off season? I happen to live in Florida where I’ve been for 20 years and we only really get one season. It’s hot year round with a few random “cold front” days around 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit in December. It’s safe to say I’m craving some seasons. Someone get me on a plane to go somewhere I can enjoy a hot chocolate and wear my cute sweaters!

I’m sharing some information today to get you on your way to Italy this winter, but first, let’s review the seasons of the year (le stagioni dell'anno) in Italian. Andiamo!

In Italy, the seasons generally fall within the following months:

  • Spring - Primavera: March, April, and May
  • Summer - Estate: June, July, and August
  • Autumn - Autunno: September, October, and November
  • Winter - Inverno December, January, and February
  • Italy in winter offers a unique charm with fewer crowds and beautiful landscapes. Here are some top places to visit if you’re looking into booking that flight during the winter months:

    1. Venice: Experience the magical atmosphere during the Carnival season in February, with its elaborate masks and festivities.

    2. Florence: Enjoy the art and architecture without the summer crowds, and visit the Uffizi Gallery and the Duomo.

    3. Rome: Explore ancient sites like the Colosseum and Vatican City, and enjoy the festive holiday decorations.

    4. Ski Resorts in the Dolomites: Destinations like Cortina d’Ampezzo and Val Gardena offer excellent skiing and breathtaking views. I’m actively looking for a spot to camp out in January!

    5. Siena: Discover this medieval city with its stunning piazzas and charming streets, perfect for a winter stroll.

    6. Alberobello: Visit this UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique trulli houses, which look enchanting in the winter light.

    7. Naples: Experience authentic Italian holiday traditions and enjoy the festive atmosphere, especially around Christmas.

    8. Bologna: Known for its rich culinary scene, indulge in hearty winter dishes and explore the historic city center.

Each destination offers a different experience, making Italy a beautiful winter getaway to explore and experience the country through a different lens. If you’re still not convinced you’ll definitely be enticed by how low the airfares are! They are very hard to resist!
